Martynas Gediminas (b. 1974) has a master’s degree in textile art and design from the Vilnius Academy of Arts. In his work, he pays a lot of attention to the overlapping surface textures, materiality and rhythmic structure. Recently, working mainly in the field of painting, he has been layering his works with large strokes focusing on bright-colored abstract compositions. A certain impression of moderate pauses is maintained between the intensities of colors on the canvas. The artist experiments a lot. He levels the tactility of acrylic paint and hides it under the printing ink then presses it, paints over it again, foils it and adds various metals, as if destroying any trace of color and refining the variability of the visible image, which depends on the point of view and the trajectory of the gaze that creates it. The artist doesn’t glorify or take care of the painting surface, but rather boldly provokes the work itself to unfold before the viewer’s eyes with extremely authentic and distinctive features.
