Arturas Aliukas

"If we had to follow fashionable labels, we could attribute Aliukas' painting to the" postmodernist surrealism ". [...] One of the most important features of Aliukas' work is the ability to play with undertones, giving the viewers a puzzle that does not really exist. According to the law of hidden harmony, absurd elements settle next to rational structures. In other words, the feeling of surprise is provoked by the ability to create artificial connections between objects that do not have such connections in empirical reality. But the most important thing for the artist is the craftsmanship in drawing carpets, arabesques, i.e. the precise technique and pleasure we experience when we realize that ignorance is also knowledge, and defeat is victory.”

Art critic Algis Uzdavinys.

Was born in 1961

From 1979 to 1984 Arturas Aliukas studied fresco-mosaic at the Vilnius Art Institute, now the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Since 1988 he has been participating in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. He created scenographic designs for performances and frescoes for public interiors, and closely cooperates with the Art Gallery Kauno Langas. In 2018 and 2019, the gallery presented the author at the international art fair ArtVilnius, Vilnius, Lithuania.

A. Aliukas is a long-time member of the Secret Society of Drawing, where artists study the human body, constantly drawing it from nature. According to the author, "drawing means, first and foremost, a connection with reality, and it is one way to control the chaos that surrounds it and one way to restrain the inner demons."
