Bronius Rutkauskas exhibition Free Copies. 11 06 - 12 06 2024
The idea of the project is to freely copy the works of the 17th-19th centuries that interested me artists' paintings. Free copies are an opportunity to experiment with different techniques, to interpret, to convey the impression of the picture in your own way, without giving a portrait likeness.
They are just people from the past.
When looking at paintings, we usually do not look at the depicted persons at all, we look at them as representatives of the past era, as artifacts, with a specific cultural background, clothing, posture, etc. You can find many such freely interpreted copies created by artists from various countries.
I think I was able to maintain respect for the original works of the artists I used in this project.
When creating these paintings, the concern was to convey humanity, like a thread connecting the modern viewer and the historical person immortalized in the painting.
Project time is winter 2019-2020.
Free copies based on the works of the following artists:
Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873), Andreas Herman Hunaeus (1814-1866), Antoine Vestier (1740-1824), Thomas Hudson (1701-1779), Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641), Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770).
