When I moved to Anykščiai 30 years ago, I was impressed by the works of Idzelis. It was beyond me how a self-taught sculptor could create such modern and amazing works?!
Today, the Stations of the Cross are in critical condition, they must be saved.
I did not choose to paint these works, but the works, through God's guidance, chose me as the author. At the beginning of painting each station I felt tension, although in the process I felt how I mastered my hand and
the most suitable painting technique, but the energy of these works accompanied me from beginning to end.
My goal with these paintings is to draw the attention of the public and to show what wonderful works of the sculptor adorn the churchyard and to invite everyone to make every effort to save them before it is too late...

Kęstutis Indriūnas

Rimantas Idzelis 1949-2013, a self-taught sculptor, a man-miracle, for whom we must be grateful to Monsignor Albertas Talačka, who brought him to Anykščiai. Until then, R. Idzelis was unknown to anyone as an author.

XV wonderful stations are located in Anykščiai the church yard of St. Matthew the Apostle Evangelist. R. Idzelis created them for 7 years, 1981-1988.

"By ordering the Stations of the Cross, Mons. A. Talacka did not give the artist any instructions regarding the treatment of themes or compositions. When creating reliefs, the artist relied only on the plot of the Holy Scriptures and his imagination, his spiritual experience. He very unexpectedly used fragments of figures, visual cues, did not avoid irony, figurative meanings, symbolic details. Monsignor was not intimidated by the artist's original decisions. He appreciated the plastic beauty of the reliefs, the power of expression. R. Idzelis Stations of the Cross, which connected the tradition of Christian art with the artistic and spiritual experience of today's people, received the most favorable evaluations from both art connoisseurs and ordinary people as a unique and unique phenomenon of church art. They have become one of the points of attraction, forcing frequent guests of the city to visit the Anykščiai churchyard."
